OUTLANDER SITES – GETTING THERE

My own overview of car, bus or train travel to each site (public transport isn’t always easy or possible to some sites but works for many.)

Abercorn Church (South Queensferry)

By car 35 mins from Edinburgh.From Glasgow 50 mins. 39 miles or 63km.

Aberdour Castle (Fife)

From Edinburgh around 35 mins by train. From Glasgow 90 mins by train.

By car from Edinburgh 55 mins, 30km or 19 miles. From Glasgow 1hr 6 mins 72km 45 miles.

Blackness Castle (West Lothian, near Edinburgh)

It’s easy to combine Blackness with Linlithgow Palace as they are very close (see below for more on the Palace.) Blackness is 35 mins drive from Edinburgh (27km/16 miles.) From Glasgow it is a 50 min drive, most of it on motorway (65km or 39 miles.)

Public transport: Bo’ness Community run a bus from central Edinburgh to Blackness, taking around 50 minutes. Book ahead however. Or, there is a regular train service to Linlithgow followed by the bus to Blackness. Arriving in Linlithgow also allows you to see the Palace,  the setting of Wentworth Prison.

Craigmillar Castle (Edinburgh)

Around 50 mins by bus from Edinburgh city centre.

Creagh na Dun (Perthshire, north of Aberfeldy)

By car , the site is around 2 hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh. Head for the Braes of Foss car park (postal code PH16 5NN), which is the starting point for the hike up Schiehallion, an iconic Scottish mountain. The site is signposted from here and lies south of Dunalastair Reservoir, east of Loch Rannoch. There, you will find a turn-off on towards the east side of the reservoir. Look in the direction of this track and you will instantly see the site of Craigh na Dun.

There is no public transport.

Culross (Fife)

Culross is around 90 mins by bus from Edinburgh City Centre via Dunfermline.

Bus from Glasgow takes about 90 minutes via Kincardine.

By car, Culross is 45 mins, 38km /23 miles)from Edinburgh. From Glasgow, 50 mins, 51km/31 miles, mostly on motorway.

Culloden (near Inverness)

By car, it is less than 4 miles from Inverness – around 15 mins.Inverness is 3 -3.5 hours drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh.

By bus from Inverness rail station: around 45 mins with up to 2 changes.

Doune Castle (Stirlingshire)

From Glasgow, 1hr 15mins; train to Stirling then bus. From Edinburgh up to 90 mins; train to Stirling, then bus to Doune.

By car from Edinburgh around 45mins , 70km or 42 miles. From Glasgow 45 mins, 54km or 32 miles.

Drumlanrig Castle (Dumfries and Galloway)

From Edinburgh 2.5 -3 hours by train and bus with 2 changes. From Glasgow 2.5 to nearly 3.5 by train and bus.

By car from Edinburgh: 1hr 50 , 101km, 63 miles. From Glasgow 1hr 15, 61 miles, 98km.

Drummond Gardens (Perthshire)

From Edinburgh 2-3hrs depending on when you set out. Train/bus changing at Dunblane. From Glasgow around 2hrs via train and bus, changing in Dunblane.

By car from Edinburgh 1hr 20, 84 km , 52 miles From Glasgow 1 hour, 78km, 46 miles.

Dunure Harbour(Ayrshire)

By car from Edinburgh 11 mins 6km .From Glasgow 1hr 81km

Dysart Harbour (Fife)

From Edinburgh, 45 mins by car , 48km. From Glasgow 1hr 10 mins , 91km

By bus or train around 90 mins from Edinburgh; up to 2.5 hrs by bus from Glasgow, just under 2hrs by train.

Edinburgh

1 hour by car from Glasgow (more during rush hour, much more! Parking in Edinburgh is expensive. Avoid Edinburgh too around rush hour, crazy traffic.) Train around 50 mins from Glasgow. Or bus around 1 hour.

All sites are walkable within 15 mins or so of Princes St.

Falkland (Fife)

By bus from Edinburgh takes around 1hr 45 mins via Glenrothes; then the Glenrothes – St Andrews bus to Falkland. From Glasgow, the train/bus takes around 2.5 hrs. Train to Stirling then the St Andrews bus,  getting off at Strathmiglo; then a wait for the bus to Falkland.

By car , it’s just under 1 hour from Edinburgh, 60km or 36 miles. From Glasgow 1hr 15 mins, 90km.

Glasgow

I hour’s drive from Edinburgh – avoid during rush hour.Train is around 50 mins, bus around an hour.

Glasgow Cathedral 

15 mins walking distance from George Sq (also used in filming.)

Glasgow University

30 mins walk from City centre or subway (10 mins) or bus (15 mins).Also on the Hop On Hop Off bus route.

Glencoe (Highland)

Around 90 minutes  – 2 hrs drive from central Glasgow.3 hours from Edinburgh.

By bus – 2.5 -3.5 hrs from Glasgow.From Edinburgh – just under 4.5 hrs.

Kinclaven Bluebell Wood (Perthshire)

Linlithgow Palace (West Lothian)

From Edinburgh: 25-30mins by train. From Glasgow: 35 mins by train.

By car from Edinburgh: 40 mins, 29km, 18 miles. From Glasgow 45 mins , 72km , 56 miles.

Loch Katrine (Trossachs)

Around 90 mins by car from Glasgow; around 2 hours from Edinburgh (112km or 70 miles)

Mid Hope Castle/Hopetoun House (West Lothian)

From Edinburgh by bus or train/bus 30 – 50 mins. From Glasgow around 1hr 45 mins by train/bus (via Edinburgh).

From Edinburgh by car 30 mins, 20km or 12 miles. From Glasgow 52 mins, 42 miles , 68km.

Newhailes House (Governor Tyron’s house in America where Jamie discusses land grants.)

Located near Musselburgh, just east of Edinburgh, it is Newhailes House is less than 30 minute travel from the Scottish capital. Options are car, bus, train :

Car : From the centre of Edinburgh, drive east in the direction of Musselburgh. The quickest route goes via Portobello, before reaching Newcraighall. There you should see signs on Newhailes Road directing you to Newhailes House.
Bus : Take the number 30 bus to Newhailes Roundabout. A few metres back from the stop you will see the entrance to the house.
Train : Take a local train from Edinburgh Waverly to Musselburgh. From there, either walk 5 or 6 minutes or catch the number 30 bus to Newhailes House.

Pollok Country Park (Glasgow)

By train from Glasgow city centre: 10 mins  By bus: around 25 mins

By car from city centre: 20 mins.

Tibbermore Church (Perthshire)

From Edinburgh, 2.5hrs by train to Perth then bus. From Glasgow around 2 hours, train to Perth then bus.

By car from Edinburgh, 1hr 76km . From Glasgow 1hr 91km.

Tullibardine Church (Perthshire)

No bus/coach access. The chapel sits 2miles northwest of Auchterarder near Gleneagles on the Crieff road.

By car from Edinburgh 1 hr 5 mins 73km. From Glasgow around 53 mins 75km.
